Were the American Colonies settled for selfish ambition or as a sanctuary for liberty and true religion?  There were two beginnings to the American Colonies.  Both still profoundly influence the United States of America.  One prevailed as the dominant from the 1600s through the 1800s, except for slavery.  Since then the other has gained more and more influence.
