Archbishop of Ecuador Lifts Standard of Truth

GLC Weekly (4 April 2022)

Thomas W. Jacobson & Isabel Maria Salazar, Global Life Campaign

His Excellency Monsignor Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, Archbishop of Ecuador, represented well Jesus Christ – who is the Head of the Church and Ruler of the nations – in his perceptive and bold statement on Saturday, 26 March 2022.  He addressed the nation calling leaders to authenticity and honesty, and to avoid “a double standard” which is “extremely dangerous.”  We had the honor of being with him on March 29, speaking to a gathering of 250 priests in Guayaquil, and then joining them for lunch.  I’m so proud of him!  He has set an example that I hope every clergyman and Christian will follow.

Background:  The majority on the Constitutional Court violated the Ecuador Constitution by dictating to the National Assembly to create a law authorizing abortion for rape.  Then the majority of the National Assembly also violated their oaths of office by approving a bill that would authorize abortion even more broadly.  Then President Guillermo Lasso tried to limit the abortion bill, but still violated his oath of office by partially approving abortion, restricting it to 12 weeks pregnancy in cases of rape.  He sent his version back to the National Assembly, which last week sent the matter back to the Constitutional Court.

To listen to Archbishop Cabrera Herrera courageously be a light to his beloved nation of Ecuador, click on the video (https://youtu.be/xY90IVtZp90).  He spoke in Spanish, and the English transcription is below.

“I would like to share something with you that I have already done on other occasions.  It is the lack of coherence or the lack that we also call authenticity or honesty between what we think, say and do.  It often leads to a double standard in what we say and see.  This is extremely dangerous: one in private and the other in public.  For this reason, I would like to invite all public officials of the different powers of the Ecuadorian state not to give in to the pressure of international or national organizations that seek to impose anti-natal policies with their political and economic support.  Please do not defraud the majority of Ecuadorians who love and defend life from conception.  We also want to work for a culture of peace free from all forms of violence against women, especially girls and adolescents.  This is a call that I make with all my heart and an invitation to us to be consistent, to be authentic, to be honest in public and in private, in all circumstances.  Christianity is not like a t-shirt that we put on when it suits us and take it off when it also suits us.”

P.S. I intended to send this message on schedule last week, but had final meetings and travel in Ecuador and then back to the United States.  Even so, this message was too important to miss.

For the precious gift of every child and remembrance of children unborn,

Thomas W. Jacobson, Founder & Executive Director
