Today (Thursday) the Ecuador National Assembly is scheduled to consider two abortion bills: the one I previously described (2 February 2022 GLC Weekly) with minor changes, and another that would restrict abortions to within 4-6 weeks of pregnancy. Many legislators think they must approve one bill or the other to comply with the Constitutional Court mandate, and to provide regulations for abortion. But the Court mandate violates the Ecuador Constitution. And many legislators are forgetting their oath to uphold the Constitution. Will the Assembly uphold the Constitution or bow to the Court? It’s time to pray hard!
